Their songs present both a vision and a lament for their ancient city. In the Bible the city is called “Mother of Peace”, and so many stories are connected to the city that nobody can relate to it neutrally. The city is a holy place to many religions, and the Biblical idea of “The new Jerusalem” has imbued the concept of \u003ci data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eutopia\u003c\/i\u003e with meaning for billions of people.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHowever, the situation in today's Jerusalem is a sore contrast to this ideal. Jerusalem is now a city of conflicts where parts of the population are living under intolerable pressure, where walls and check-points divide the city, and where injustice prevails.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eJerusalem could have been a living ideal for today's world, a place where all religions and faiths could live in peaceful coexistence. This vision seems to be highly remote at present, and actions by politicians who actually have the power to do something about the situation do not contribute much that is constructive, to put it carefully.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOn the new album by “Daughters of Jerusalem” most of the songs are related directly to their city. Two of them are written by the well-known Palestinian artist \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eRim Banna\u003c\/b\u003e, others are older, including the monster hit “The Holy City” by Stephen Adams from 1894. The CD’s producer, \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eErik Hillestad,\u003c\/b\u003e has given this song new English lyrics dealing with today's situation in the city. The American \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ePrinceton Girlchoir \u003c\/b\u003ealso contributes on this song. This is a powerful act of solidarity from young women in a country Palestinians usually do not experience as a constructive contributor on the path to peace and justice. The album is released by KKV with funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Suhail Khoury has collaborated with KKV since he first worked on Sondre Bratland's Christmas record “Rosa frå Betlehem” (The Rose from Bethlehem) in 1992. This was the start of the Ten Sing (Teenage Singing) movement.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWorking with the Norwegian YMCA and YWCA, Grønner started Ten Sing in the Norwegian city of Bergen, basing it on the American Sing Out choirs (“Up with people”) which the MRA (the Moral Re-Armament movement) had initiated in 1965. At about the same time Sigurd Osberg and Holm W Holmsen started the choir Crossing in Asker (town near Oslo) based on the same pattern (they had attended the Up with People show in Njårdhallen in Oslo in 1966), but while Ten Sing in Bergen presented an entertainment show with “meaningful songs”, the Crossing put “rhythmic hymns” on their repertoire. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe Norwegian YMCA and YWCA then started “planting” Ten Sing choirs across the country. This became the Ten Sing movement which later was strongly influenced by the youth rebellion and Jesus movements of 1968. The choirs and bands were to be led by the youths themselves (with skilled guidance and courses given by leaders). Young people just into their teens were given artistic leadership responsibilities. Aided by resources provided by the Lutheran Evangelical Church of Norway (the state church) the youths had access to instruments, practice venues and equipment, and enjoyed the trust of artists and composers. A total of 360 Palestinian villages were evacuated by force and taken over or razed to the ground, and 900 000 people were forced to flee to camps in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and the West Bank. In recent years, this fragmentation has taken on the cloak of systematic ethnic discrimination in Jerusalem, and Israeli settlers, supported by Israeli soldiers and police, are allowed to commit criminal offences against Palestinian families. Their houses are stolen and children and elderly people are brutally thrown out into the street. The purpose is unambiguously expressed by the most aggressive settlers: They want to stop the Palestinians from ever being able to call Jerusalem their capital.
