When they came to the prison and met her uncle who was sitting behind a glass wall with some tens of other prisoners, the mother managed to surreptitiously show the uncle Mahsa’s braids, and for the imprisoned men the glimpse they had of the braids was like a ray of freedom.

The Iranian musicians Mahsa Vahdat and Atabak Elyasi have worked on this project for three years for Mahsa and SKRUK and the harpist Ellen Bødtker. Mahsa has written the melodies, Atabak has written poems and arrangements and additional melodies for the choir, and the producer Erik Hillestad has rendered the poems into English. Mahsa, SKRUK and the publisher, KKV, agreed in the summer to use the exquisitely subtle title “Braids of innocence” for the album. Everyone saw it as somewhat special, but also as an original and exciting source of curiosity. This act ignited a rage in the hearts and fed the yearning for freedom of an entire generation of Iranian women. And braids also became a symbol, a freedom flag for women around the globe. Two other poets are also featured on the record: the classic Rumi and the contemporary poet Mohammad Ibrahim Jafari.

Mahsa and Atabak call themselves “liberal traditionalists”, and the music on the album is thus a special genre. SKRUK’s conductor, Per Oddvar Hildre describes it as tonal paintings. Ellen Bødtker’s harp is the centre point for the soloist’s and choir’s sound palette, where Atabak’s harmonies break with most rules for choral arrangements. The overriding effect is both unusual and exquisitely beautiful. It is also a torch lighting the way for how the Western countries should address the on-going protests and the Iranian regime’s abusive treatment of its own people.

The album was recorded in Volda Church in August 2022 by Alf Christian Hvidsteen.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0610/7116/3587/products/FXCD494_1000x1000_b29d3711-dc3d-458a-9666-c7ee227e4d9d.jpg?v=1669973840
marjan-vahdat-the-eagle-of-my-heart
Marjan Vahdat // The Eagle of my Heart // CD

“Singing gives me a freedom that even conquers self-censure”

So says Marjan Vahdat. But it is first and foremost due to her artistic curiosity that she has now realised this idea and the fact that she quite often performs without instrumental accompaniment, having done so all her life.

Apart from two songs from the Lorestan province, Marjan Vahdat has composed all the melodies herself, one of them inspired by music from the historical region of Khorasan. The lyrics are from various Iranian poets, some of them classical, such as Rumi and Hafez, and some contemporary, such as Forough Farrokhzad and Sohrab Sepehri, poets who have meant much to the movement that is now demanding equality and freedom for women in Iran.

Each of the songs conveys a little story. The title melody, for example, has lyrics written by Marjan that tells of Atash and her sorrow for the loss of her niece, 18-year-old Nika Shakarim, recently killed by the authorities because she took part in demonstrations under the slogan “Women, life, freedom". Since this murder Atash has written daily about Nika on social media.

“Lullaby for Taher” is a song in Kurdish language about another victim of the rain of bullets fired by the authorities, Taher Azizi from Piranshahr. His mother recently sang this song for him after he was shot during a protest march. Marjan has written another melody, but the lyrics are the same.

“My Savior” is part of a long poem by Tahere, a female poet from the nineteenth century. Marjan’s grandmother would often sing this poem. We also hear an old recording of her voice together with Marjan. Singing solo is forbidden for women in Iran. Marjan says that she believes that her grandmother imagined that she was facing a large audience every time she sang this song.

Because of the situation for female singers in Iran, Marjan has lived in exile in California for some years. “Living in exile resonates deeply in me, stirring profound emotions and inspiring my songwriting”, she says.

The album “The Eagle of my Heart” was recorded in Tøyen Church in Oslo, produced by Erik Hillestad and released by KKV.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0610/7116/3587/files/3000x3000_FORSIDE_FXCD503_Marjan_VaahdatThe_Eagle_of_my_Heart.jpg?v=1709216731
diverse-artister-i-begynnesen-var-pulsen-50-ars-lidenskap-fxlp-boks2
I begynnelsen var pulsen - Kirkelig Kulturverksted 50 års lidenskap // 4LP

ANNIVERSAY LP BOX // IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS THE PULSE
On 18 October KKV is launching “In the beginning there was the pulse” – a triple LP with hand-picked selections from the company’s six fabulous decades, celebrating the 50 years’ anniversary of KKV (1974 – 2024).

This is a special edition where each LP side offers remastered songs from each their decade.
