In spite of this difficulty, the producer has masterfully brought all these threads together to create an authentic and harmonised soundscape around Marjan’s powerful voice. The music has a great span of expressions, depths and dynamics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe songs have been created with inspiration from traditional music and poetry from various parts of Iran, but most of the melodies and lyrics have been written by Marjan, while her older sister\u0026nbsp;\u003cb\u003eMahsa Vahdat\u003c\/b\u003e\u0026nbsp;also has contributed a few melodies, and some of the melodic and lyrical material has traditional roots. Poems by the contemporary poets \u003cb\u003eAhmad Shamloo\u003c\/b\u003e and \u003cb\u003eForough Farrokhzad\u003c\/b\u003e have also been included.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e\u0026nbsp;\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe songs are mostly about longing, and while they might appear to be love poetry, on some of the songs the listener can decide\u0026nbsp;\u003cspan\u003ewhether\u003c\/span\u003e\u0026nbsp;the longing is for a lover or the country of Iran, this garden among the nations of the world that has been left stranded by the world community due to geopolitical power struggles and the Islamic revolution in 1979.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMarjan lives in exile in the USA, and there is little doubt that in several of her songs she expresses her deep longing for her native country, which has so many cultural treasures of poetry, music, pictures and textiles to offer, in addition to unique cultural landscapes and stories from a deep and rich cultural tradition. And of course, she also misses the people who live there – the people she grew up with, but now is prohibited from meeting. She is still always hopeful to some day in the future being able to return to her homeland. But it is first and foremost due to her artistic curiosity that she has now realised this idea and the fact that she quite often performs without instrumental accompaniment, having done so all her life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eApart from two songs from the Lorestan province, Marjan Vahdat has composed all the melodies herself, one of them inspired by music from the historical region of Khorasan. The lyrics are from various Iranian poets, some of them classical, such as Rumi and Hafez, and some contemporary, such as Forough Farrokhzad and Sohrab Sepehri, poets who have meant much to the movement that is now demanding equality and freedom for women in Iran.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach of the songs conveys a little story. The title melody, for example, has lyrics written by Marjan that tells of Atash and her sorrow for the loss of her niece, 18-year-old Nika Shakarim, recently killed by the authorities because she took part in demonstrations under the slogan “Women, life, freedom\". Since this murder Atash has written daily about Nika on social media.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Lullaby for Taher” is a song in Kurdish language about another victim of the rain of bullets fired by the authorities, Taher Azizi from Piranshahr. His mother recently sang this song for him after he was shot during a protest march. Marjan has written another melody, but the lyrics are the same.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“My Savior” is part of a long poem by Tahere, a female poet from the nineteenth century. Marjan’s grandmother would often sing this poem. We also hear an old recording of her voice together with Marjan. Singing solo is forbidden for women in Iran.
