But…nobody tells Rim what she can or cannot do. Rim met in Oslo with her Norwegian producer Erik Hillestad (KKV record label) and Tunisian sound cutter “SC MoCha” from the electronic activist collective Checkpoint 303. Together they came up with a plan for an unprecedented audio experiment; Checkpoint 303 would remix data from Rim’s medical files (PET and X-ray images) by converting them into sounds to which Rim would then recite (and whenever possible sing) her own poems describing her resistance and her struggle. The outstanding jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, who collaborated with Rim on her last album, immediately accepted to be part of the project and the adventure began.

The album

The 15 songs on this album are an explosive mix of iron-willed and moving spoken word, experimental sound art, complex beats and powerful provocative and heart-warming piano melodies. This process known as “data sonification” was programmed by Checkpoint 303 and applied to medical data chosen by Rim. The data was recorded as part of the medical diagnostic procedures that Rim underwent using Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computer Tomography scans (X-ray measurements). The scans used included cross-sectional images of Rim’s chest, heart, brain and throat. Checkpoint 303 converted these images into sound either by direct sonification of image pixel values into an audible spectrum, or by converting the images into 2D midi files. Additionally, two portrait images of Rim were also transformed to sound using the same procedure. Finally, the ambient layer in the last song of the album was constructed using the actual sound of the image-guided radiation system recorded on video during one of Rim’s radiotherapy sessions in a hospital in Berlin in 2016.

More information:

Rim Banna. Nothing stops Rim. In country after country from Tunisia in the west to Yemen in the east people took to the streets in numbers that surprised the world. Several setbacks have occurred before the child has been able to stand more or less securely on its own legs. "Songs from a Stolen Spring" is a tribute from an American freedom movement that can look back on many victories to one that still has "Many rivers to cross". She has toured and held concerts in several of the countries where artists have mobilized the masses to overthrow regimes and presidents, especially in Tunisia and Egypt, where she has had many performances. Now Rim has searched back into the Pan-Arabic cultural heritage and composed her own music for classical Arabic poetry, which through time and space reflects the revolutionary spirit that permeates the atmosphere of the audiences she meets on a daily basis. Many of the local inhabitants have been forced to move after brutal night raids where Israeli settlers have thrown them out of their houses and taken over their homes. The singers perform their laments to the accompaniment of a Norwegian/American band. Some of the songs have been written for the occasion, others are old traditional songs from Palestine. With the heading "A time to cry, a lament over Jerusalem" they join a 3000 year old tradition in Jerusalem: Weeping and mourning for the city that so often has let its inhabitants suffer at the hands of greed, hate, misguided religious zeal and lust for power.

Rim Banna, Wissam Murad, Nai Barghouthi and Jawaher Shofani have chosen from two to four songs each. The target audience for their songs is us in the West; the big world far away from the little country on the innermost shores of the Mediterranean. We who for far too long have silently allowed the Israelis to break up the last bits of land that were once assigned to the Palestinians. In recent years, this fragmentation has taken on the cloak of systematic ethnic discrimination in Jerusalem, and Israeli settlers, supported by Israeli soldiers and police, are allowed to commit criminal offences against Palestinian families. Their houses are stolen and children and elderly people are brutally thrown out into the street. The purpose is unambiguously expressed by the most aggressive settlers: They want to stop the Palestinians from ever being able to call Jerusalem their capital. This strategy is actively supported by the actions of the Israeli authorities.

The Norwegian musicians taking part in the project are Hallgrim Bratberg (guitar), Kenneth Ekornes (drums) and Gjermund Silset (bass). Steve Gorn from the US plays oriental flute and clarinet. She performs with the same band, featuring Eivind Aarseth (guitar), Gjermund Silset (bass), Rune Arnesen (drums) and David Wallumrød (keyboards), in addition to her husband Leonid Aleixenco (acoustic guitar). This time Rim gives us a selection of new Palestinian love songs. The title, "Seasons of Violet", reflects the lilac, a violet flower which in Palestine is a symbol of love. All the songs have been composed by Rim together with Leonid Aleixenco, while Rim's mother has written some of the lyrics.

Track list:

1.
