And a good place to start may be a brand new music album called “Bertolt Brecht – en kynisk menneskevenn” [a cynical philanthrope].\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHere – in the midst of a soundscape of guitar, accordion, saxophone and voices singing in German and Norwegian – \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eVigdis Hjorth\u003c\/b\u003e, Norwegian author, presents some distilled treasures from Bertolt Brecht’s poetry.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe singing voices are folk-artist \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eJørn Simen Øverli\u003c\/b\u003e and multi-vocalist \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eRuth Wilhelmine Meyer\u003c\/b\u003e. They have interwoven a pattern of Brecht’s lyrical poetry, alternating \u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ebetween\u003c\/span\u003e the original version in German and Norwegian renderings of the same lyrics by Øverli. Ruth Wilhelmine Meyer adds sparkling elements with her innovative vocal expression.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe melodies have mostly been written by \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHanns Eisler\u003c\/b\u003e in addition to two songs by \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eKurt Weill\u003c\/b\u003e. Vigdis Hjorth is part of the musical adventure with her terse, recited quotes from Brecht. The arrangements are by \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eEspen Leite\u003c\/b\u003e playing accordion (Brecht’s preferred instrument), the singers and \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eRolf Erik Nystrøm\u003c\/b\u003e on saxophone. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBertolt Brecht is a poet who was able to put words to what it is to be a human being, where mass production, society’s machinery and economic growth need us a pawns in the grand scheme of things. Alienation, exploitation, impotence and love are underlying themes that are just as relevant today as they were in the inter-war years.
